Digital Adventure Through Yanchep National Park
Adventure seekers!
Unlock your phones and your curiosity on the brand-new Yanchep Discovery Trail. Craving fresh air with the kids? Keep it simple with a family nature wander – and now there’s even more reason to lace up, with a new digital trail that blends nature, history and adventure in Yanchep National Park.
Just 45 minutes north of Perth, Yanchep National Park now boasts two digital trails. The first trail proved so popular that a second has been created in the Nature Play app – the 2.5km Yanchep Discovery Trail. Aimed at teens, adults and adventurous younger kids, this isn’t any ordinary bushwalk. Along the way, the app weaves in an interactive layer with challenges, fun facts and plenty of photo-worthy moments. Flat and easy, the loop trail takes about an hour to 90 minutes at a relaxed pace.
We begin at the historic McNess House Visitor Centre with water bottles full, sunscreen on, and hats snug on heads. But before setting off, we open the app for a quick group selfie, which the kids decorate with fun stickers, then we’re on our way. Along the trail, the app provides audio, images and arrows to guide us, while the ‘Little Green Feet’ markers help keep us on track.
Wildlife is everywhere on this trail! At Koala Boardwalk the pace slows, eyes turn toward the treetops and little fingers point excitedly as they spot koalas lounging in the shady branches. Currently, six cute koalas live here, can you spot them all? The path then winds through shady bushland, where kangaroos rest and tiny joeys peek from pouches. As we wander through the wetlands and sandy stretches, we spot pretty wildflowers, bright fairy wrens and scurrying lizards.
Yanchep National Park’s landscape is stitched with stories from the past, and the trail brings them all to life. We discover a fun fact or three about the Yanchep Inn, Gloucester Lodge and the Old Tram, and stop at interpretive signs that mix learning with light-hearted challenges. At the Old Golf Clubrooms, the kids pretend to swing a club at the first tee, while at Crystal Pool they strike playful diving poses for a photo challenge.
No family walk is complete without a treat and Chocolate Drops tempts us with something sweet. With ice creams in hand and grins as wide as the lake, we grab one last group photo. For something more substantial, the Yanchep Inn’s beer garden is an inviting spot to relax and refuel.
The Yanchep Discovery Trail is the perfect family day out — balancing learning, adventure and time together, all without breaking the bank. Free to access through the Nature Play PlayTrails app, it’s easy to download, unlock with the redemption code DISCOVER, and set off on your own adventure. In just a couple of hours, you’ll enjoy a walk packed with nature, history and plenty of surprises around every bend.
